In search of the “Island feeling”
Travelling through the park’s towns can become a moving journey parallel to discovering the world, cleverly narrated in Dessì’s works; rich in culture and history, ancient traditions, religious and popular rituals, the unique expression of a farming-shepherd civilisation in which, from the skilful hands of men and women: tools, rugs, jewellery, knives, baskets, ceramics, terracotta, chests, refined carvings and genuine and intensely perfumed food and wine products come to life; delicious flavours, cheeses, desserts, oil, and wine made in a traditional way, are all expressions of that farming-shepherd civilisation that fills the writer’s works and makes Sardinia a unique and exclusive microcosms.
A unique journey, in which the pleasure from visiting places rich in charm is cleverly combined with the pleasure of discovering ancient craft professions (knife makers, basket weavers, hide dealers, engravers, potters, goldsmiths, and many more), the art of bakery, wine making; oil, honey, sweets, and local dishes production; … and also the least expected objects common to local tradition, realised using raw materials only, offered by nature: cork, animal horns, wool, wood, willow and olive branches, clay and terracotta, herbs and roots.
A real journey of awareness of the millenary culture and identity of Parte d’Ispi, made of knowledge and flavours, perfume, and identity of places and of men.
One can take part in the fairs and festivals, or simply visit craft workshops; for weaving, wool dying using natural methods; ceramic and gold manufacturing, and the realisation of baskets and wood carving, knives and blades.
The Park also offers the greedy a large choice of great wine and food specialities and typical menus comprising several traditional dishes, amongst which, those based on products offered by nature (mushrooms, asparagus, thistle and wild fennel, wild savage, spices: saffron, basil, rosemary and mint…), farming products (wine, cheese, citrus fruits, cherries, vegetables, oil, olives,…), and pastoral (milk, cheese, meat: lamb, goat …).
Products in which the flavours of the land are perfectly combined with the creation of small and medium local companies (bread, sweets, cold cuts, liquors, …). Several companies produce remarkable perfumed olive oil and olives, features of the area; the typical bread, sweets, nougat, honey, citrus fruits and cherries, peaches and almonds, cheeses, cold cuts, suckling pig, lamb, liquors (those of the Murgia Company are famous, amongst which the notorious Villacidro Murgia), and many other delicacies.
This world, made up of remarkable food and wine traditions, perfumes, spices and typical tastes of the land, could be an excellent guide to discovering the flavours of grandma’s ancient recipes. The menus of “Paese d’ombre” (Man’s land) offer simple dishes that farmers consumed in the countryside during their lunch break, sat by the fire, and those more elaborate dishes, which were consumed at the dinner table on more important occasions
