For Dessì, like for many other islanders, the sea is what separates them from the rest of the world, not only physically but also psychologically; it is the element that gives life to a personal sense of homesickness that enthrals Sardinians while abroad. Discovering Parco Dessì also means discovering the great variety of environments that it comprises and amongst these, the sea!
Only a few of the park’s municipalities face the sea, nonetheless, its extension and variety is plentiful, comprising the best part of the South-western coast line of the island: Arbus with its 40 km or more of coast and Buggerru, bordering Iglesiente; behind, the Linas Mountains - Marganai and Arcuentu Mountains.
The territory, rich in amazing scenery can be visited and discovered via fascinating activities and routes that part from the sea towards the mountains or vice versa. Via tourist excursions lasting more than a day one can reach the sea parting from the mountains by following the paths walked by miners and goats. Surprises await along the extensive Arbus coast, and the beaches that wind between themselves, all different from one another: immense fine golden sand beaches, or small rice grains, smooth stones emerging from the water similar to an array of eggs, sheer cliffs, small bays that can only be reached via boat o tiring walks and the multicoloured water (from emerald green to deep blue), sandy and rocky sea beds…
Amongst the numerous places some are of particular importance, such as the oasis of Piscinas, one of the vastest sand dune ranges in Europe, dunes that move and change over the years, covered in lush vegetation rich in juniper and Mediterranean shrub, the “caretta-caretta” turtle nests in the dunes and the Sardinan deer moves silently, and it is not unusual to catch a glimpse of one when night falls.
Just as beautiful are the areas and beaches of Pistis, amongst whose dunes the poet’s house hides; a small picturesque building realised in an intricate juniper daedalus, where thanks to the patient workmanship of two elderly men from Guspini, several decorated environments with wonderfully perfumed bunches of helichrysum have been obtained; Torre dei Corsari (corsair towers), Costa Verde (green coast) and Scivu all located in Arbus and those of San Nicolò and Cala Domestica at Buggerru.
To discover the park’s coasts, also means to enrich ones knowledge of history: the human history of miners and fishermen, of tuna slaughtering and tuna fishing boats, and geological history: the numerous rare fossils situated along the coast are of considerable importance, they recall the ancient origins of the area that render it a true Palaeontology laboratory.
