Fluminimaggiore preserves plenty of environmental treasures and monuments to visit and admire. One of the most ancient territories in Europe, this land tells of the history of the Earth before the arrival of dinosaurs, from 590 million to 290 million years ago, in fact the most complete Paleozoic succession in Italy was built from its very rocks. The numerous fossils, collected in the area by enthusiasts and scholars, have contributed towards a rich collection held at “Il Museo Paleontologico” (the paleonthological museum).
The coastal area extends from Portixeddu up to Capo Pecora and at the Murru biancu coastline, the la “spiaggia delle uova di dinosauro” (beach of dinosaur eggs), characterized by sheer cliffs along the coast intersected by bay. Sheltered by the coast and at the foot of the town, there is the alluvial plane formed by the Mannu River, sandy and fertile, covered in immense citrus fruit gardens, vines and vegetables.
Here, in the vicinity of the town one can admire “Sa Matta ‘e su Cumpingiu”, the largest exemplary of cultivated pine in the island. In the background, the Linas-Marganai mountains: wild valleys rise as high as 1000 meters above sea level in the Linas massif where vegetation is characterized by dense holm-oak groves and Mediterranean shrub, also where there is an abundance of never-ending karstic rivers, such as: Pubusinu, the biggest in Sardinia. In the calcareous massif of Marganai there are hundreds of natural caves, the most significant of which being Su Mannau.
The inland provides numerous occasions for trekking, cycling, horse riding, and off road driving, along the many paths marked in the past by coal merchants and shepherds.
