History

Tower in the vicinity of Cala DomesticaThe archeological area of Capo Pecora provides evidence of the presence of man during the nuraghic period, here, hidden amongst the vegetation; there is a tomb of the giants; numerous obsidian slivers and Oreri nuraghe.

The Antas temple, the symbolic monument of the area, is situated in the territory of Fluminimaggiore.

The Romans for the mining of silver-bearing galena surely already knew of Grugua, Planu Dentis and Sa Merchisa and all of the Buggerru mining zones.

Several lead block findings leave no doubt on the matter.

The entire area of the Riu Mannu valley, called “Salto di Gessa”, was heavily frequented during Roman times, even if there is no proof of a settlement, the mining town Metalla resided in this area, maybe in the area of Grugua near the town of Buggerru, where important findings from that era have been discovered, several burials and the remains of a Roman villa.

Around the mid 200s, this land passed over to Guglielmo Capraia and Chiano Visconti, then it was assigned to the Gessa family during the Aragon period, it was then handed down to the Asquer.

The Tower dates back to 1600 and looks over the headland dominating the amazing beach of Cala Domestica, and had the duty to protect the coasts from Barbary and Arabian raids.

The Savoy transformed the area into public domain.

From here on, the history of this place still lives in the faces of the now old miners and their children, a “mining history” that brought about the birth of the present day center.
