This prestigious and impressive building sits on the ruins of the old feudal building, which the Marquees Brondo had built, feudal lords of Villacidro from 1594 up to1694.
In 1767 the castle once abandoned and in ruins, was purchased by the then Bishop of the diocese of Ales, Monsignor Giuseppe Maria Pilo; it was demolished and the bishop’s building was constructed in its place. This building became the summer residence of the bishops of the diocese.
Between 1807 and 1814, when Villacidro became one of the 15 institute provinces in Sardinia, under the reign of Vittorio Emanuele I, the building was also the head office of the prefecture and was equipped with a prison for the occasion.
In 1932 the diocese was used as the bishop’s seminary and from 1984 to 2000, it was the head office for l'Istituto di Scienze Religiose (Religious science institution).
Author’s words
…the target could have been the iron weathercock on one of the many chimney tops of the Archbishop’s building, that once hit ran around and around letting off a mournful creak that could even be heard from Fulgheri house. (Giuseppe Dessì – Paese d’ombre)
