It is the first and oldest of the churches at Villacidro. A Gothic-Aragon style construction situated on a previously Roman establishment, the Parish dedicated to Santa Barbara has undergone several restorations through out the years: the construction of the main aisle and the chapels, the bell, later adorned with a small dome brightened by glazed tiles, forming the shape of a fan and the substitution of the wooden roof with a masonry barrel vault.
In the XVIII century, under baroque influence, an intervention on the part of the Spazzi brothers and Domenico Franco, adorned the church with a main altar in inlayed polychrome marble and the staircase at the presbytery’s entrance, also in marble.
The recently restored cane organ dating from the 600s is of particular interest.
Author’s words
"…The boys and girls high-pitched cry and the sparrows’shrieking were the first sign of nighttime, which were followed by the chiming of Ave Maria of the church bells of Santa Barbara." (Giuseppe Dessì - Paese d’ombre)
