The ancient rite of “Su Scravamentu”, the descent or Christ’s Deposition from the cross, has been commemorated at San Gavino by the Santa Croce Brotherhood since 1745 and since then it has been repeated every year on occasion of Good Friday.
The large crucifix, in juniper wood and almost life size, kept in Santa Croce Church, was built in 1745 by the carpenter Francesco Melis for the sacred portrayal of Good Friday.
On that occasion, after the descent from the cross, a solemn and sorrowful procession of believers accompany, while singing Miserere in Sardinian, the deceased Christ to Santa Croce Church, to await his resurrection. And it is from this sanctuary that on Easter Sunday, the resurrected Christ meets with the Madonna.
