The San Gavino foundry was created in the early 30s by the” Società Italiana del Piombo” (Italian lead Company). It was built near the old private railway line wanted by the Montevecchio Company to facilitate the transportation of minerals from the mines to San Gavino, where the line passed directly on to Cagliari.
Works for the construction of the foundry began in 1931, activity started as soon as 1932, and it soon became the most important plant in Italy, capable of producing 20.000 tons of lead a year.
Thus, it became possible to work the extracted materials on site in the Montevecchio district without having to depend on the plants of the Peninsula, a procedure that until then, comprised 68% of production costs.
The foundry’s activities were unfortunately effected by the crisis of the mining sector and was completely closed down in the 80s.
