Construction of the church dates back to the XVI century, the time in which the Santa Croce Brotherhood emerged, the oldest in San Gavino, which carried out religious activities including funerals, processions and had the privilege of participating in the sacred portrayal of Christ’s Deposition.
A simple structure, with just a main aisle covered by a barrel vault supported by arches, the small church has hosted for centuries now, the rites of holy week and Easter, every year.
Since 1745, during Easter rites, a large juniper crucifix is used to commemorate the ancient rite of Su Scravamentu (Christ’s Deposition) and it is at Santa Croce that the resurrected Christ prepares himself for his encounter with the Madonna on Easter day morning.
