The tradition of the San Gavino carnival emerged relatively recently: the first version dates back to 1983, since then the manifestation has increased in dimension and become established and it is now one of the most important in the region. Thousands of people from all over the island follow the lively and colourful event that passes through the town’s streets at the rate of dances and parties every year.
The carts, cleverly created with paper mache by local artists, are amazing mobile stages, elaborate in their form and colouring, as are the imaginative multicoloured costumes.
The corteo is opened by Babballotti, the symbol of the carnival, later sacrificed at the end of the cheerful celebrations.
