The director’s building of the Montevecchio mine is situated in the main square of the village of Gennas. Finalized in 1877, it once held technical, security and administrative offices and the director’s and his servants’ lodgings.
Realised in a neo-Renaissance style, the building is divided into three levels and spreads out around a central courtyard enriched with magnificent frescoes shedding light upon the hallways facing them.
The S. Barbara church is partially incorporated with in the building (apses and transept), a small Latin cross chapel reserved to the family that was the then proprietor of the mine: Giovanni Antonio Sanna, now a public oratory under the Guspini Parish.
The frescoes belonging to the building are especially charming. The most important decoration can be found in the meeting room, la Sala blu (blue room): a large cloister vault with frescoes and stuccoes both on the vault and on the walls and even on the door.
Floral features alternated with feminine and bird figures give the environment an almost surreal feeling to it.
The building has been open to public for quite a few years now and it has recently been decorated with furniture in a style that reproduces the atmosphere that recalls its glorious and renowned past; on the intermediary level: the living room in Empire style, the pool room, the dining room that holds an amazing porcelain collection and the Sala blu used for official meetings, parties and musical evenings; on the top floor: a glance at the servants life that not only worked in the building but also permanently resided there; the kitchen with the copper collection, the space dedicated to washing and the bedrooms.
The Historic archive of the Montevecchio mine can be found on the first floor, currently under going rearrangement that holds a unique documented patrimony in order to enable the reconstruction of mining activity.
