Originating from Cambrian limestone, present day the caves are more than 8 km long.
The two internal streams have formed two main arms: the right arm, where the Rapido stream flows and the left arm, originating from the Placido stream. Landslide halls with in the cave characterized by very fragile blocks alternate with awesome halls adorned with aragonite.
The cave’s real treasure is “la Sala Vergine” (Virgin hall) more than 50 meters high, completely white, a place overflowing with coralloid amongst a mass of overshadowing alabaster columns. A part of the cave is, present day, outfitted for tourist including the section that goes down to the impressive Rodriguez well, 26 meters long.
The visitor can admire polychrome concretions suspended above crystal clear emerald green pools from comfortable walkways.
The cave hosts examples of troglobia fauna amongst which the rare Stenasellus Nuragicus isopode, completely white and eyeless, endemic of some caves of Sulcis-Iglesiente.
