Mining and miner’s history is by now a long gone and scarcely believable history, so unreal that throbbing mining society, of deafening sounds, the squeaking of the rail wagons, smoking chimneys, tunnels and mineral digging sites in which the miners spent their tiring days, appears to us.
It is in homage to these men, women and children, who through their work have contributed towards the writing of the town’s history that the Buggerru town council has set up the “Museo della Memoria” (remembrance museum).
The lay out is accommodated in a building that belonged to the complex of structures associated to the mines and situated in the vicinity of the port. On the ground floor, where the workshop once was, the original set up of the machinery of that time has been preserved, mainly lathes and milling machines. Inside, the mine’s canteen with its original fittings and the old camera with the film camera of those times have been pieced together again.
Displays of finds of various types not only tell of mining history but also archaeological, geological, and everyday life in the quarter.
