The building was erected at the end of the 40s so as to provide an adequate premises for the "Geologic mining service" of the Montevecchio mine.
Besides hosting the mining-petrographic laboratory, the building held the exposition, for teaching-museum purposes and included several mineral samples deriving from pits in the area and other Sardinian and national sites.
Property of the municipality of Arbus, the building was restructured in 2004 with the aim of using it to host the Mineralogical Museum and the geological Office was rebuilt.
